Sakura-jima
Accross the harbor, the cone of Sakura-jima dominetes the skyline
of Kagoshima. The peninsula is virtually one lava and ash field,
and it is interesting to spend some time looking around the huge
and jugged masses of fascinating black rock. |
Kaimondake
One of the attraction of the Ibusuki area is the graceful colonial
shape of Kaimon-dake. It can be climbed in about two hours,
starting from Kaimon-dake bus stop. |

Sand bath (sunamushi)
One of the most enjoyably unusual sensations of Japan is to
be buried up to the neck in hot sand. This is possible where a hot
spring surfaces near a beach, permeaning the sand and heating it
to a high but bearable temperature. The experience is wonderfully
relaxing. |
